What Is Malware?

Malware is a general term for malicious software designed to disrupt, damage, spy on, misuse, or gain unauthorized access to devices, accounts, networks, or data.

Understanding Malicious Software

Malware can appear as a harmful program, infected document, deceptive browser extension, unsafe mobile application, or hidden process. Some threats are designed to steal information, while others encrypt files, display unwanted advertisements, or disrupt systems.

Learning about malware is defensive. The goal is to recognize risk, reduce exposure, respond safely to warning signs, and know when to seek help from a qualified security professional.

Common Types of Malware

Can Backups Always Be Recovered?

No. Slow performance can result from low storage, aging hardware, too many startup programs, software bugs, overheating, or pending updates.

Malware is one possible cause, especially when slowness appears with pop-ups, redirects, unknown programs, disabled security features, or suspicious account activity.
